Thick or thin lenses
Spectacle lenses can be made in many different materials and forms.

Obviously the power of your spectacle lenses is determined by your prescription and in order to see clearly this can not be altered. The stronger the lens power the thicker your glasses are, however by altering the materials the lens is made from and reducing the size of the lens we can make your glasses appear more aesthetically pleasing.

Spectacle lenses are made in glass or plastic and both have advantages and disadvantages.

Glass:

•     Heavier although in some cases thinner than the thinnest plastic lens
•     Don't scratch as easy as plastic, but are not as safe as they can shatter

Plastic:

•     Not as thin as glass but generally more comfortable and safer
•     Can be treated to make them more durable

Over recent years great improvements have been made to plastic lenses making them nearly as thin as glass. Which is why 90% of people choose plastic lenses despite a tendency for the lenses to scratch.

The same principle applies to glass. If the refractive index of the material increases then the lens becomes thinner, this procedure allows us to offer you thinner glasses.

At Specsdirect2u we will surprise you with the savings that can be made compared to High Street Opticians prices.
